God & reason
Consider why anything exists, why the world has order, and what Christians mean by a Creator.
Christians believe that God created and sustains the world. This claim concerns the source of existence itself, as well as the meaning of human life. Genesis 1:1 introduces God as Creator; Acts 17:24–28 describes our continuing dependence on Him.
A skeptic may ask for scientific evidence, a philosophical argument, or a reason to trust God after suffering. Those are different questions. Ask which one matters before offering an answer. A discussion about the origin of the universe will not, by itself, answer a grieving person’s concern about God’s goodness.
One line of philosophical reasoning asks whether the things we encounter explain their own existence. People, stars, and living organisms depend on conditions beyond themselves. Christians understand God as the ultimate source of dependent reality, rather than one more dependent object within it. This argument requires defending its account of dependence and explanation; simply naming a mystery does not establish the Christian conclusion.
Christians also reflect on the intelligibility of nature and our capacity to reason about it. Psalm 19:1 and Romans 1:19–20 connect creation with knowledge of God. A philosophical discussion must still examine alternative explanations. A gap in current scientific knowledge is not a sound foundation for an argument that God must have performed a particular unexplained event.
Even if a first cause or necessary foundation exists, why identify it with the God of Christianity? That objection has force: an argument about existence alone does not establish the Trinity or the resurrection. The Christian case also requires examining Jesus, the biblical witness, and the coherence of Christian teaching.
Read Acts 17:16–34. Notice how Paul addresses his hearers’ beliefs, makes a claim about the Creator, and then turns to Jesus and the resurrection. Write down the premise you find least convincing. A careful conversation can start there.
